Need Some Really Good Advice On Writing A Dissertation

A dissertation is perhaps one of the most complicated and lengthy pieces of work that you will have to undertake. The experience can be very stressful, not only because you are aware of its significance but because you are expected to produce an original project that is relevant to your subject.

As most students will not have been through this experience it is understandable that they are unsure about what to do in order to write a good dissertation. This article will look at some of the most important factors that you need to consider when starting the project.

The big positive about a dissertation is that you will have plenty of time to think about what you want to write about. Typically you will be given the entire academic year to complete the project and so it is important that you start as you mean to go on. It is a very good idea to speak to your tutor on this matter. He or she will be able to advise you on suitable topics and whether or not they have the expertise to guide you through the dissertation.

If you start planning early then the process will be much less stressful. You will feel more in control and this will subsequently prevent the feeling that your dissertation is taking over your life.

Once you have settled on a suitable topic, you next need to plan meticulously. Take a look at your weekly timetable, taking into account your social life as well as your academic commitments and identify the times when you can work on the dissertation without any likelihood that you will be interrupted or distracted. Then make sure you stick to that time and work on it every week. Even if you write just a few hundred words at a time, it will soon add up over a few months.

Speak to your tutor and ask for advice on what books to use for your research. If you select books and articles with the specific question of your research in mind then this will help you to avoid wasting time on information not relevant to the dissertation.

Once you begin the writing process you will need to adopt a structure before you do anything else. Although there are variations in the structure of a dissertation and you should discuss this with your tutor, the basics consist of a title page, abstract, acknowledgments, table of contents, introduction, body, conclusion, bibliography and appendices.

As you write the dissertation help you will need to give some consideration to the content and style of your writing. This is important as you have to remember that you are writing a piece of academic work. Although rules vary and you should speak to your tutor for clarity there are some norms that are presence in all academic institutions.

You need to avoid the use of slang and colloquialisms in your work and also try to express yourself clearly. Try to avoid gender specific phrases in your writing, instead try to speak about the subject in a plural way.

It goes without saying that your work is expected to be correctly punctuated and grammatical correct. This can be done after you have written the bulk of the dissertation. That is fine, but it is critical that you get the basics correct.
